Reducing Time Poverty through Mechanization Service

Available data suggest that in Ghana, 18% of the harvest of primary crops, such as maize and millet,  is lost to post-harvest loss. This worsens the already poor yield and food insecurity situation smallholder farmers endure in northern Ghana.  In line with our commitment to agricultural development, ACENSIA will offer mechanization services tailored to the needs of rural smallholder farmers, with a special focus on women, as women perform 60%-80% of farm labor. Access to agricultural machinery, such as tractors and threshers, can enhance productivity, reduce time poverty, and empower women farmers to increase their yields and incomes.

Tractor Service: ACENSIA will facilitate access to tractor services for smallholder farmers, especially women. Through our mechanization outreach, we are mobilizing tractor service providers from other regions to fill the service gap in the North East region. Our network of tractor service providers ensures timely tractor service, empowering farmers, especially women farmers, to maximize crop yields and farm profitability.

Thresher Services: Plans are far advanced to offer thresher services to smallholder farmers. Our threshing services will reduce the time and effort required for threshing by up to 80%, allowing farmers to process their harvests faster and more effectively. This service is especially beneficial for women farmers, who often bear the brunt of manual threshing and grain processing activities. Access to threshing service can reduce time poverty for women, allowing them to engage in other economic activities.

Empowering women: Access to mechanization services can empower women smallholder farmers to take control of their agricultural activities, reduce time poverty, and increase their productivity and incomes. This economic independence will enhance women’s decision-making power within their households and communities.
